What Do Pocket Money Really Teach Children?

The new school year is approaching, and with it come parents’ questions to which there are no universal answers. One of them is - what to do about pocket money: how much should you give your child, should payments be linked to household chores, and should you control their spending?

Although many parents follow a clear payment schedule, many others take a more flexible approach. The amount of pocket money often depends on the child’s age, their needs, or how actively they participate in household chores.

Today, pocket money is increasingly seen as more than just a small amount of money for sweets or entertainment. For many parents, it is a way to teach children how to handle money, plan their spending, and make their own financial decisions. And the amount of pocket money often depends on how actively they participate in household chores. But this raises an interesting question:

What exactly are we teaching children through pocket money, and what ideas about money do they carry into adult life?

Чого насправді навчають кишенькові гроші?

At first glance, everything sounds right: the child makes an effort, does certain work, and receives a reward for it.

But there is a nuance.

We live in a world where financial stability increasingly depends on more than just hard work. Many people face unstable employment, debt, or a lack of social support, even if they work diligently.

When we link money exclusively to personal effort, children may develop the idea that financial success is always the result of proper behavior and hard work. And if there is not enough money, it means that a person simply did not try hard enough. In real life, everything is much more complicated.

Prosperity often depends not only on work, but also on starting opportunities, family circumstances, the environment in which a person grows up, their health, and many other factors. That is why it is important to talk about money more broadly than simply in terms of the principle “work and get paid.”

Many experts also recommend using pocket money as a way to encourage good behavior.

But what exactly should be considered good behavior? Each family will have its own answer. In this case, money becomes not only a financial tool, but also a way of influencing a child’s behavior.

Moreover, children quickly notice that money can be not only a means of payment, but also a means of influence. Research shows that they learn to negotiate, bargain, and look for solutions that are beneficial to them within the rules established by adults. Therefore, it is worth asking: what signals does a child receive if money becomes a reward for certain behavior, and what does this tell them about control, choice, and personal boundaries?

The risk is that money may begin to be associated not only with opportunities, but also with the need to meet other people’s expectations. And these ideas often stay with a person for a long time.

For example, the results of a new study by the London School of Economics suggest that experiences of financial control during childhood can also influence adult life. In particular, some women who experienced such control during childhood later have a stronger desire for financial independence, even when it does not always bring the greatest material benefit.

How can we raise children to have a responsible attitude toward money?

If we are going to link money to behavior, perhaps it is worth focusing not on obedience or hard work, but on qualities such as kindness, generosity, the ability to share, and respect for others. This approach is much closer to how children actually perceive and use money.

Children usually understand their family’s financial capabilities quite well and often adjust their own wants and spending accordingly. At the same time, they are quite resourceful in the way they handle money.

In children’s social environments, unique mini-economies constantly emerge, where things are borrowed, exchanged, or shared with one another. And perhaps it is precisely here that children learn important lessons about responsibility, caring for others, and mutual support.

Interestingly, even despite the rising cost of living, today’s children do not lose their willingness to help others. Some of them donate money to social, medical, and environmental initiatives that are important to them. This gives reason to talk about a generation for whom money can be not only a tool for personal consumption, but also a way to support important social change.

Pocket money is also a good reason to talk to your child about:

  • Where money comes from — how people earn money, why some professions are paid differently, and what stands behind every salary.
  • Where money “goes” after a purchase — who receives the money and how our spending supports the economy.
  • Local businesses and the community — why it can sometimes be worthwhile to buy goods from small stores and support local entrepreneurs.
  • Income differences — why the financial opportunities of different families can vary significantly.
  • Inequality and fairness — what factors influence people’s well-being and why not everyone starts from the same conditions.
  • Charity and mutual support — how even small amounts can help others and make a positive difference.
  • Conscious consumption — how our financial decisions affect people, society, and the environment.

Perhaps the main purpose of pocket money is not to reward “correct” behavior or convince children that success requires nothing more than working hard. It is much more valuable to use pocket money as an opportunity to talk about fairness, mutual support, responsible consumption, and the impact of our financial decisions on other people. These are the skills that may prove to be the most important in adult life.

At the same time, no conversation about money will be as convincing as the example set by the parents themselves.

Children closely observe how adults plan their budgets, make financial decisions, save money, and prepare for the future. That is why it is important not only to talk about a responsible attitude toward money, but also to demonstrate it in practice.

Saving, building your own financial reserve, and using long-term financial planning tools, including life insurance, help create financial resilience for the family. And for children, this becomes another valuable lesson: it is worth taking care of the future in advance.
